Love Birds

These birds may look like part of the wall painting, but I assure you, they are really live parrots. Very loving ones, in fact. Taken at Sentosa.

(And this pair was kissing and kissing and kissing..)

watch the iso! i see a lot of noise. never never use iso-1600 for your cam unless extreme conditions call for it e.g. night photography but you don't have a tripod, or night candid shots where you wanna shoot and not think so much.

for that second kissing bird shot you're shooting at 1/220s shutter which is pretty fast alre, so i think it'll be better to lower the iso and use a slower shutter speed — but yet still fast enough for good exposure without blurring from hand vibrations. maybe drop to iso-200 and around 1/120s would produce cleaner output.

i think your compositions are nice! artistic~

WOW. You know, I don't know how to use the iso stuff yet. Heh. These were shot on auto mode, with manual focusing. I'll try out the iso stuff soon! :)

Thanks for the lesson! Should be getting a tripod soon too, maybe after my exams. Tell me what hall you get ok?

[WARNING: VERY LONG COMMENT]

don't fret! you have a really powerful camera there. not many non-dslr prosumer cameras have RAW mode. make good use of it! lucky i managed to find a hacked firmware for my camera that allows RAW mode too (much like ppl hacking psp's to allow pirated games) but alas i dun have a sd card reader as my camera only can read jpg files from the sd card so i still can't start experimenting yet :(

just wanna mention this... high dynamic range (HDR) photographs... it's a really interesting concept and the output is a sight to behold! hopefully it'll ring a bell if you come across this term in future!

High dynamic range imaging - Wikipedia

i just bought my tripod last friday. $38 from harvey norman!

Tripod 1
Tripod 2
Tripod 3
Tripod 4
Tripod 5
Tripod 6

with a new tripod you can try shooting panoramas! like so!

went to shoot the sunrise yesterday morning. but it was cloudy :(

still waiting for news on when to apply for hall. will keep you updated!

sorry, i realised i'm not done yet. have too much to share and too much free time at work also lol

for a start, try program (P) mode instead of full auto. program mode is very similar to auto in the sense they will meter the lighting and choose the shutter and aperture size for you, but you can manually configure white balance, iso and stuff. you will still be able to do manual focusing. perhaps this would be better for you!

then, slowly you can upgrade to shutter priority (Tv / S) or aperture priority (Av / A) mode... heh heh!

good luck! i have much to learn from you artistic ppl about framing and composition... i think my shots are quite boring... angles, subjects and stuff, i'm bad at those. i'm only a nerd who meddles with technical stuff lol!

oh my the tripod can extend till so tall! is it nice to use? is it heavy?

the pictures on the HDR article are really nice. your camera/computer can do that?

the cloudy day makes your sunrise paranoma seem to recede into the shadows. quite creative compared to the usual nice brilliant skies. :) your cam has the paranoma option or you use computer to piece them together?

i really suck at the technical stuff. i just know that taking nice pictures makes me happy hoho.

tripod

not bad. comes with a cool green colour spirit level! you can see it in picture 6. hahaha. remember that from secondary school physics practical? lol

i only used it once and i think it's quite worth the money. the picture 1 has the details but anyway here they are:

full height - 1.28m (i suspect they measured wrongly cuz if i remember right, it reaches above my stomach or even up to my chest.. i'm not that short ba?)
folded length - 43cm (too big to fit in a normal bag i think?)
weight - 680g

harvey norman was selling one for $48 that's about 1.3-1.4m but the folded length is 50+cm and the weight is about 800g+... the promoter actually recommended that one cuz he said buy taller is better, you have the flexibility of shortening it... but i think mine is just fine. save 10 bucks!

hdr

you need to be able to shoot in raw to do hdr. doing it with jpeg is possible but there are certain drawbacks. if you're even meddling with hdr you should be professional enough to mind these drawbacks. your cam supports raw out of the box, whereas mine can do that after applying the hack. but i can't try it out yet until i obtain a sd card reader so that i can upload the raw files from my camera to the computer. after that, it's just some steps and adjustments in photoshop. you'll need to do bracketing (uh-oh, new term again?) too, which your cam also supports out of the box. it's a good cam!!!

panorama

not paranoma la! lol. pan... cuz it has a panning effect (panning is rotating your camera from left to right while fixed on a same spot). some cameras (including mine) has panorama assist modes such that after you take the first shot, it will appear on half the screen so that you can shift your camera and take the second shot and visually see how it matches. but it's not essential. as long as you horizontally pan your camera (hopefully with a tripod) and do decent overlaps, you will be able to stitch them together. i shot my photographs normally for that sunrise panorama.

you'll definitely need a program to stitch the pieces together cuz it's not possible to take photographs aligned perfectly, for reasons i'm sure you won't want to know. :P

conclusion

that's why we've to learn from each other! technical me vs. artistic you. hahaha! jiayou! post more works!
